Alpha Stim is an electro-tens device used worldwide by Physicians, healthcare professionals, Psychologists and therapists and more than 70 Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and in many Military Medical Centers worldwide as an effective, safe and non-pharmacological choice for the treatment of anxiety, depression, insomnia and pain management.
Alpha Stim is a stand alone therapy and may also be used in conjuction with medications, behavioral therapies and other treatment modalities. The Alpha Stim is one of the clinical tools that Dr. Garlock utilizes to treat anxiety, depression and pain. The efficacy of this treatment modality has been demonstrated over many years in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This treatment technology is used in traditional counseling sessions and is used while "talk therapy" is being provided.
Alpha Stim is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is FDA approved for the treatment of anxiety, depression, pain and insomnia. There are 250 research studies that have been conducted which support the use of this tool in the treatment of anxiety, depression, pain and insomnia. Doctor and patient surveys revealed that it has helped 90% of the patients who tried it. It is also supported by over 55 completed independent research studies and published reports.
Alpha Stim treats patients with microcurrent technology using two protocols: Cranial Electro-therapy Stimulation (CES) and Microcurrent Electrical Therapy (MET). Both of these protocols are effective and easy to use in therapy sessions. CES is the process of directing a microcurrent of less than one millampere, through the body via Alpha Stim smart probes or self adhensive AS-Trodes TM with a 2 to 5 minutes protocol for the treatment of peripheral pain.
Alpha Stim works because its wave form activates particular groups of nerve cells that are located in the brainstem. These groups of nerve cells produce the chemicals serotonin and acetylcholine which can effect the chemical activity of nerve cells that are both nearby and at more distant sites in tnervous system. These cells are stimulated to control the activity of afferent and efferent nerves that are in the brain and spinal cord. Alpha Stim appears to amplify activity in some neurological systems and deactivate activity in orthers. This neurological "fine tuning" is called neuromodulation.
At times, it may be necessary to refer a client for medication to address their anxiety and/or depression issues. Referrals for possible medication will occur after other treatment approaches have been tried and are not fully successful. Often, clients will require a varied approach when their anxiety and/or depression is being treated. A combination of treatment approaches most often is the most successful approach to treating mood disorders. Clients will be referred for medication management services only after objective testing has been conducted and other treatment approaches have been tried and have not fully treated the mood disorder symptoms that a client is experiencing.
